Dirty tricks and toxic waste in Ivory Coast

In the dead of night, the 19th of August 2006, a group of trucks from a newly formed company Abidjan arrived to take waste away. First they illegally dumped their first load at a huge tip in Aquedo.A powerful smell engulfed the area and the tip's operators were called out and the drivers sent packing. They drove around to look for other places to dump their waste, and ending up tipping the toxic waste in 18 different places. The smell made the people gag and sicken.Thousands of people fell ill, says Esaie Modto, "There were women who miscarried, and that was very painful. But still, the worst was that three people, two adults and a girl were killed by the toxic wastes. That was very hard."

Jean Francois Kouadio and his wife, Fidel told BBC NewsNight that Fidel was eight months pregnant with their first child when the fumes swamped their home. She gave birth prematurely and their newly born son dies within a day. Born one year later was their daughter Ama Grace. She fell ill to, the docters said that she was suffering from "was suffering from acute glycaemia caused by the toxic wastes" and they couldn't do anything. Jean Francois and Fidel now fear they will never become parents.

One of the founders of Transfigura, Eric de Turckheim told Jeremy Paxman "these materials were not dangerous for human beings. It was smelly, but not dangerous."Transfigura continues to deny any wrongdoing.

AIR FRACE FLIGHT 447

French army air crewman searches for remains of Air France Flight 447, which had 228 people on board. A seat, an orange buoy, a tank and a fuel slick were spotted about 400 miles off the Brazilian coast.
The Air France jet's wreckage is believed to be 2 miles beneath the Atlantic, perhaps beyond recovery. If there is ever to be an answer to what caused Air France Flight 447 to fall from the sky, the best clues probably lie on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean amid rugged volcanic ridges and steep trenches, some plunging deeper than the Grand Canyon.Search planes scouring the area Tuesday spotted a seat, an orange buoy, a tank and a fuel slick about 400 miles off the Brazilian coast. Brazilian authorities identified them as pieces from the Airbus A330 that disappeared late Sunday, and French officials reiterated that there was virtually no chance that any of the 228 people aboard survived, the flight was flying during a heavy storm and was probably struck by lightning.

Sri Lanka rebels say war takes heavy civilian toll

In Colombo, Sri Lanka, the Tamil Tiger rebels said on Wednesday that an intense fighting in the northern war zone was killing and wounding hundreds of civilians a day and appealed to the U.N. to push for urgent shipments of food and medicine to the area.

The Sri Lankan forces have cornered the ''ex-powerful'' rebel group into a tiny piece of land on the northeast coast along with tens of thousands of civilians.

The Secretary General of the U.N. Ban Ki-Moon said to President Mahinda Rajapaksa in a phone call on Tuesday to suspend the offensive to allow aid into the war zone. Rajapaksa has said no to calls for a cease-fire, saying that a truce would give the rebels a chance to regroup.

In a letter addressed to Ban Ki-Moon, a rebel political leader Balasingham Nadesan said to the international community to pressure the government to allow aid into the region.

Swedish 52-years old woman falls for internet lottery deception

The woman, from Sundsvall in northern Sweden, was told by a gang of international fraudsters that she had won $2.5 million in a lottery.
First, the woman was told she would have to open a bank account in the Netherlands to secure the money. And there would be a fee and the woman paid up. The requests continued and the woman was tricked into handing over 460,000 kronor ($57,000) over a nine month. The woman received an email last summer that her email address had been entered into a lottery and that she had won the jackpot. After having set up the bank account, the woman waited for her money to arrive, but no funds were forthcoming and the 52-year-old then received a request for money to release a code from a consultant in the UK. The requests then continued again for the next eight to nine months. The woman was forced to borrow money from the bank to secure her lottery money. And in the end, she had paid $56,450 in total. Sundsvall police believe that the woman has a marginal chance of recovering any of her money.

Maoists says to step up protests in Nepal

The communists in Nepal says in Wednesday they are going to step up protests and block a new government from forming unless the president supports the firing of the country's army chief in a dispute over integrating former rebels into the military.

President Ram Baran Yadav refused on Sunday to honor a directive by communist Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to fire the country's military chief because of his refusal to enlist former communist fighters into the military. Dahal resigned in protest Monday, throwing the Himalayan country into a huge crisis.

Police used tear gas and batons made of bamboo to break up a protest by about 500 supporters of Dahal's Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) in Katmandu on Wednesdsay. Unfortunately, no one was seriously injured in the clash.

The authorities have imposed a ban on protests and rallies in main areas of Katmandu this week.

Followers of Mao have been holding protests since Dahal, the ex-prime minister of Nepal, resigned Monday and the party's lawmakers shut down parliament Tuesday by gathering in the front of the assembly hall and chanting slogans.

Pakistan Army Retakes Key Town

After a week of strong criticism here and abroad over its inaction, the Pakistani military claimed on Wednesday to have captured control of a key town just 60 miles from the capital in the strategic district of Buner which was overrun by hundreds of Taliban militants last week.

The development came one day after the military deployed fighter jets and helicopter gunships against the insurgents. It was not immediately clear what level of resistance the Taliban had offered.
Pakistan also agreed to move 6,000 troops from its Indian border to fight militants on its western border with Afghanistan, according to a Pakistani official who did not want to be identified discussing troop movements in advance.
But American officials, who welcomed the redeployment, said Pakistan was still not doing enough to fight the insurgents, who are tightening their hold on the country. The Americans expressed frustration that Pakistan was still rebuffing their offers to train more Pakistanis to fight Al Qaeda and the Taliban.

Things to do when you are Bored

*With Nothing*

Pretend you're a robot(Amusement Potential: 1-3 minutes)´

Walk down the street with mechanical movements, adding 'zzzzzt' sounds with each motion. Pretending to have a motor broken in, say, your left hand can add at least 30 seconds more entertainment

Rate passers by(Amusement Potential: 10-15 minutes)

Secretly award passers by marks out of ten as you go along, offering (unsaid) expert criticism over their clothing, hairstyle and footwear choices.

Make Star Trek door noises(Amusement Potential: 1-2 minutes)

Stand by an electric door to a bank or something and make that silly "Scccccccchwop" sound heard whenever people popped on to the bridge to hang with Captain Kirk.

*Things to do with very little*

Make prank phone calls(Amusement Potential: 20-60 minutes)

Very entertaining, but requires discipline. Remember - immature complaints don't make a call funny, but getting the other person to believe a ridiculous story will. Try seeing if you can get them to make noises to 'test' the line. One to get you started off: Call McDonalds with weird complaints about their food.

Try and sound Welsh (if your not already) (Amusement Potential: 1-3 minutes)

The key to sounding Welsh is to make sure that your voice goes up at the end of the sentence, so that everything sounds like a question. Throw in a superfluous 'isn't it?' at the end of everything you say and you're halfway there. Isn't it?

Burn things with a magnifying glass(Amusement Potential: 5-30 minutes)

Ants are always fun to use for this, but burning the face of someone you don't like, under some circumstances, can be just as entertaining.

*Things to do with another Person*

Pour water in hand, make sneeze noise, throw water on back of person's neck(Amusement Potential: 5-15 minutes)

Always a good gag. For an even bigger reaction out of the person, act like you're not sorry at all for what they think you did. Comment instead on how big that sneeze was or about how there was a lot of mucus in that one.

Stare at the back of someone's head until they turn around(Amusement Potential: 2-5 minutes)

This works on the "I have the feeling I'm being watched" principle. Conduct an experiment-does this really work?

Have a "Who is less competitive" competitionwonder (Amusement Potential: 1-3 minutes)

Trying to win at this will make you lose. Trying to lose makes you win which makes you lose. Not trying at all makes you lose which makes you win which makes you lose.

ROBOT ATTACK!!!

US to tackle resurgent bed bugs

The US government is holding their first bed bug conference.

The bed bugs have re-emerged in dormitories, hospitals, shelters and hotels in several cities; though people thought that they had been virtually eliminated decades ago.
These bugs are know to live in the seams of the mattresses, sofas and sheets, and then coming out in the night to feed on their victims.
Though these insects aren’t known to carry any diseases, many people develop an itchy swelling when bitten.

Driver holds on as hijacked semi leads police on chase

A hijacked tractor-trailer, its driver clinging to the outside, led police on a wild chase Tuesday on Interstate 75 just south of Atlanta, Georgia, officials said. When the chase was over, the truck driver was safe and the hijacking suspect was in custody. Aerial footage of the chase showed truck driver Torrey Lang, 32, seated behind his truck's cab and holding on as it hurtled down Interstate 75 with Georgia State Patrol in pursuit, and the suspected hijacker behind the wheel.
Lang, apparently was in a parking lot when he saw the truck being stolen. Lang jumped on the side of the truck, then made his way to the back of the truck when it started moving. As the truck was moving, Lang called 9-1-1. He stayed on the line describing the situation and his location until his phone was either dropped or lost. Once the truck came to a complete stop, more than a dozen officers surrounded it, guns drawn. Officers broke the drivers' side window, opened the cab door and pulled the suspect from the vehicle. Milo Banks, 27, will be charged with fleeing and attempting to elude, kidnapping and theft by taking, according to Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright.

It seems the Somalian pirates are on the run and are being captured or found across the globe. They are being found in the African waters, the North Atlantic and even a few in the English Channel. However, this does not seem to be the end of the story. What are believed to be copycat pirates have been found in numerous places (mainly near Southeast Asia).

Getting back to the original pirates, though it seems that they are waining in power and surprise, they certainly have no intention of going down without a fight. Nine of the suspected pirates were captured after trying to unsuccessfully capture an Italian luxury liner off the coast of Seychelles (a small chain of islands north of Madagascar).

Moving on from pirates, a while back it seemed that the nation of Japan was losing money at a huge pace and was believed to go 'bankrupt'. The Japanese's response to this was new investments and a vast changing of prices in its companies. In fact, at least 23 companies stated that their sales would be dropping drastically and would continue go down steadily in their stocks. However, it does seem that Japan may be able to pull themselves out of this yet!

Sri Lanka Vows To Destroy Rebels, As EU Envoys Visit

Sri Lanka said it will prevent Tamil Tiger rebels rebuilding during the Sri Lankan army's halt to combat operations, as U.K. and French envoys visit the island to talk about the civilians caught in the conflict.

Stoping the operation is to allow civilians to leave the place where the conflict is and not for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam “to resettle into another brutal war,” said the president Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Two days ago, the government ordered a halt to the use of heavy weapons and combat aircraft, saying they are concentrating on rescuing as many as 20,000 civilians which are still held by the LTTE.

Sri Lanka says the LTTE is facing defeat after a 26-year fight for a a different Tamil homeland and they have only 500 fighters holding out in a strip of land on the northeast coast.

“Now is the time for the fighting to stop,” AP cited Miliband as saying. The ministers said the government should let aid workers into the conflict zone.

Life In Sweden

Children Demands More Respect From Adults

“Oh, there goes one of those”, Says Petra Niskanen, thirteen years old, when she describes how she is sometimes seen by adults. Those who want to treat children and youths with respect should just act like they act with everyone else, says Petra.

She says that she, herself; try to be more aware of how she acts against today’s youth that are visitors in the library.

Pink Dolphin

On a charter boat, in USA, Captain Erik Rue, who's age is 42, photographed a pink dolphin, which is actually an albino. He began studying it after the mammal first surfaced in Lake Calcasieu, an inland saltwater estuary, north of the Gulf of Mexico in southwestern USA.
Capt Rue originally saw the dolphin, which also has reddish eyes, swimming with a pod of four other dolphins, with one appearing to be its mother which never left its side.

He said: "I just happened to see a little pod of dolphins, and I noticed one that was a little lighter. "It was absolutely stunningly pink.
"I had never seen anything like it. It's the same color throughout the whole body and it looks like it just came out of a paint booth.
"The dolphin appears to be healthy and normal other than its coloration, which is quite beautiful and stunningly pink.
"The mammal is entirely pink from tip to tail and has reddish eyes indicating its albinism. The skin appears smooth, glossy pink and without flaws.
"I have personally spotted the pink dolphin 40 to 50 times in the time since the original sighting as it has apparently taken up residence with its family in the Calcasieu ship channel.

World News

First, in space, the ISS (International Space Station) was scheduled this month to be possibly hit by an old piece of Soviet Space Junk. Luckily, the ISS was not hit, but it was quite close.

Next, getting back to my previous blog, Gråpes, it seems that through the economic depression, Bulgaria has been one of the European countries that has suffered most. But luckily, through newly discovered grape varieties, the country may have a chance to get back in the European market.

Now, heading on to southeast Asia, the Communist nation of North Korea accused the Republic of South Korea and the US of sending over 200 spy planes, including the benowed U-2 Spy Plane, over North Korean borders.

Apparently the North korean nation has a rocket unit there and they were planning to launch a satellite within the rocket within a few days. As far as we know the launch is still planned and teh schedule has not been changed.
Until next time!

As the economic crisis hits people from everywhere, a French pole vaulter has done the obvious thing to highlight himself for a new sponsorship deal. The man ran naked through the streets of Paris, holding his pole aloft, and posted the video on the internet! (Nice way to get some attention eh!)
His History:Romain Mesnil, who won a silver medal at the 2007 Athletics World Championships in Osaka, used to be sponsored by Nike, but says his contract expired last year and he could not renew it.

Turtles are famous for swimming thousands of miles to return to the beach where they lay their eggs. But one sick turtle had a different instinct – he took himself to a hospital for injured reptiles!!!
The staff of the hospital spotted the 35kg "Loggerhead Turtle" in the sea near the centre in Marathon, Florida, and decided to investigate after it hung around for a few hours. "This is the first time a turtle has ever showed up at our doorstep waiting to be admitted," said hospital worker Ryan Butts, who found the creature. 'He has a bacterial infection. He's very thin and very weak. He needs Tender Loving Care.'

Gråpes

Gråpes are the way Swedish people say 'grapes'. Someone in our class is a grape. **** is a grape. He is a grape because he sometimes turns purple, goes crazy and kills people. But then he returns to his original annoying form. **** likes grapes.

In 1410 Dr. ¤¤¤¤ developed the theory that when a human person is mentally challanged they will attempt to turn into the form of a purple grape, a purple grape vine, a bunch of purple grapes or a painting of purple grapes.

Moving on, grapes are a small fruit-like berry who are often found in bunches, connected by vines. The grapes range in colors from blue to green, the most regular ones being purple-red and green. Perhaps the most famous of all grape uses is wine - an alcoholic bevergae made by fermenting grapes and then adding a bit suger to sweeten it.

Here is a list of grape export country capitals, worldwide:
