Sri Lanka Vows To Destroy Rebels, As EU Envoys Visit

Sri Lanka said it will prevent Tamil Tiger rebels rebuilding during the Sri Lankan army's halt to combat operations, as U.K. and French envoys visit the island to talk about the civilians caught in the conflict.

Stoping the operation is to allow civilians to leave the place where the conflict is and not for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam “to resettle into another brutal war,” said the president Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Two days ago, the government ordered a halt to the use of heavy weapons and combat aircraft, saying they are concentrating on rescuing as many as 20,000 civilians which are still held by the LTTE.

Sri Lanka says the LTTE is facing defeat after a 26-year fight for a a different Tamil homeland and they have only 500 fighters holding out in a strip of land on the northeast coast.

“Now is the time for the fighting to stop,” AP cited Miliband as saying. The ministers said the government should let aid workers into the conflict zone.
