Life In Sweden

Children Demands More Respect From Adults

“Oh, there goes one of those”, Says Petra Niskanen, thirteen years old, when she describes how she is sometimes seen by adults. Those who want to treat children and youths with respect should just act like they act with everyone else, says Petra.
Children experience too often that they are not treated with respect from the collective, in the library, and other public places, shows a new investigation.
“A serious disallowance”, Says the Children’s Ombudsman.
Hoe does children want to be treated?
- We are also human, if you understand, you shouldn’t think any different. Says Emil, fourteen years old.
A librarian in Stockholm, Ylva Håkansson, says that the guiding principle for how you should treat a child in a public place should be clearer because not all adults are use to this. She says that she, herself; try to be more aware of how she acts against today’s youth that are visitors in the library.
Children’s Ombudsman Fredrik Malmberg is not happy with this investigation as it shows that more children feel disrespected. He wants to keep doing this investigation and see why so many youths don’t feel respected when they are in public places.
